My roots began in a Magic Valley farming/financial business family. My dad was a farmer and public accountant; my mom went back to college to earn her teaching certification when I was in junior high. I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by grandparents and even great-grandparents and know the value of family dinners, family support and even family accountability! My two sisters and I had the best of both the farm and “city” growing up experiences.
I graduated from Twin Falls High School. I have a BS and Masters in Education from the University of Idaho and Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Boise State University.
I taught taught junior high and high school reading and English for more than forty years, including fifteen years at Magic Valley Alternative High School. Teaching was the perfect career.
After retiring, I worked at the local YMCA first as membership, then Business Manager. Earlier, my husband and I co-owned a local 7-11 gas-convenience store. Together, we helped finance the organization and start-up of Magic Valley Bank, an independent bank.
After retiring, I returned to teaching in public school education as well as teaching adults and was a part-time educational consultant, working with alternative-school seniors to encourage job training certification at the College of Southern Idaho. Today I teach and tutor English in an after-school program.
I believe in my community and I actively participate in my community’s diverse interests: Twin Falls Public Library Board Trustee; Twin Falls School District Budget Advisory Board; State educational committees; Salvation Army; CSI/Refugee Center; community garden; CSI Early Childhood Education Advisory Board; TF trail & highway clean-up; Girl Scouts; mental health hotline; Air Force Association; PEO; church; foreign exchange student host; political advocacy.
My family: husband Chris, three wonderful daughters, great son-in-law, and a delightful granddaughter.
In considering me, Catherine Talkington, you will find someone as tough as nails for higher expectations, yet rather nice in working with people. You will find someone who gets the big picture and knows that by working together and with best research we create better solutions. I am listening to you.
